چکیده

It is well acknowledged that the equation of radiative transfer (ERT) provides an accurate prediction of light propagation in biological tissues, while the diffusion approximation (DA) is of limited accuracy for the transport regime. However, ERT-based reconstruction codes require much longer computation times as compared to DA-based reconstruction codes. We introduce here a computationally efficient algorithm, called a diffusion–transport hybrid solver, that makes use of the DAor low-order ERT-based inverse solution as an initial guess for the full ERT-based reconstruction solution. To evaluate the performance of this hybrid method, we present extensive studies involving numerical tissue phantoms and experimental data. As a result, we show that the hybrid method reduces the reconstruction time by a factor of up to 23, depending on the physical character of the problem.

A hybrid transport-diffusion model for radiative transfer in absorbing and scattering media

A new multi-scale hybrid transport-diffusion model for radiative transfer is proposed in order to improve the efficiency of the calculations close to the diffusive regime, in absorbing and strongly scattering media. In this model, the radiative intensity is decomposed into a macroscopic component calculated by the diffusion equation, and a mesoscopic component. The transport equation for the me...

Transport- and diffusion-based optical tomography in small domains: a comparative study.

We compare reconstructions based on the radiative transport and diffusion equations in optical tomography for media of small sizes. While it is well known that the diffusion approximation is less accurate to describe light propagation in such media, it has not yet been shown how this inaccuracy affects the images obtained with model-based iterative image reconstructions schemes. Using synthetic...

Accelerating nonlinear reconstruction in laminar optical tomography by use of recursive SVD inversion.

Image reconstruction in the most model-based biophotonic imaging modalities essentially poses an ill-posed nonlinear inverse problem, which has been effectively tackled in the diffusion-approximation-satisfied scenarios such as diffuse optical tomography. Nevertheless, a nonlinear implementation in high-resolution laminar optical tomography (LOT) is normally computationally-costly due to its st...

A higher order diffusion model for three-dimensional photon migration and image reconstruction in optical tomography.

In this work, we derived three-dimensional simplified spherical harmonics approximated higher order diffusion equations. We also solved the higher order diffusion equations using a finite element method and compared the solutions from the first-order diffusion equation and Monte Carlo simulations. We found that the conducted model is able to improve the first-order diffusion solution in a trans...
